People Doing Panel: A Story of Lost Hype [Blaugust 24]

A week or so ago, the Guidebook for PAX Prime was released to the App Store (and therefore, the world). PAX attendees from all over began assembling their schedules, myself included from day one. Which panels did I want to see? Could I make any confusing connections with the unexplained system on the right sidebar? PAX was approaching fast, and I needed to make sure I optimized my panel time.

And then, 'people doing panel' came to light. What was its name? Well, for a long time, that's what it was. The internet sat down to conspire, and I stayed along for the ride until the very end of the situation.

'People doing panel'? What kind of panel is that? Well, the fact that it was the only ambiguously-named panel immediately sparked a reaction of excitement from the community of PAXgoers, and something so ambiguous just had to mean that it would be something big. Did I believe this? Yes, from the very beginning so.

"What do you think it's going to be?" Curly asked me. I shrugged. I wasn't even planning to go to panels that day due to wanting to mainly see as much cosplay as I could. However, I came to the conclusion that something with such high potentials may be worth sitting in line on Saturday for. I added it to my Guidebook and canceled plans to see the Guild Wars 2 panel. If there was going to be a big reveal or an exciting announcement, I wanted to be a part of it - even if I didn't know what was going on. In the meantime, I started to look around to see what other people were saying about the event...

The PAX Reddit community is one of the most helpful resources I've found so far in the process of preparing to go to the con. Most everybody's friendly and helpful, as well as super hyped just like I am to experience the big weekend. Surely enough, there was plenty of discussion going on about the mysterious panel by people. Very quickly was the topic of Half Life 3 brought up, many people wondering over the possibility of it getting announced at the panel. (This also resulted in the HL3 bot coming into play, reminding us that with all the talk of it, it probably wouldn't come out for another few hundred years.) I sat down and did some thinking myself. Game drop? Celebrity appearance? What was it going to be? Little did I know, I was about to get my answer.

"Did you see the -"

"Yes." Disclaimer: Curly and I were texting, but I imagine this is how it would have turned out if I had the chance to really cut him off. In the last few days, it was revealed that the people doing panel was really a filler name for a Polaris-based Youtuber appearance or three. If you're a fan of JackSepticEye, CinnamonToastKen, or PewDiePie, then go ahead and enjoy the panel. I'm not really into these guys myself (but I'm going to hopefully meet Markiplier on Sunday!), and now that I can attend the GW2 panel, I will. I feel like Penny Arcade had a really good opportunity by involving a mysterious, unnamed panel, but alas, it seems to have been just a filler. Some have suggested a double-bluff of sorts, but I don't think I'm buying it. See you all on Saturday.

TL;DR - Penny Arcade named panel ambiguously; Near-confirmed not a HL3 drop; Internet despairs
