Blaugust Day 2: Cardboard Computer Reassures Fans of KR0's Fourth Chapter

The Stars Drop Away

When I finished the third chapter of Kentucky Route Zero, I looked around the internet and noticed that people had been pining for Chapter IV for a long time, longer than I'd ever known about the game. I was worried; Would it be released? Was it being worked on? Having played Pirate101 all the way to the current endgame (the fans will get what I mean), I'm fairly used to waiting for updates at this point, but I was starting to lose hope. However, Cardboard Computer, the developers of KR0, Tweeted in a well-appreciated update just yesterday.

The Schpeel

"We've had a few concerned emails lately, so we want to be clear that rumors [and] speculation about Kentucky Route Zero being abandoned are wrong. We get that it's taking a while and that's frustrating for some folks -- especially, it seems, because of the episodic structure. It's a bummer that our process is at odds with some expectations about how long this should be taking. But we're not changing our process."

What I appreciate here is that Cardboard Computer addressed the concerns of the fans directly. While I'll avoid complaining about multiple other experiences of waiting for game updates, it's so incredibly refreshing to see a company actually stepping out and giving a no-nonsense explanation of how things are going. In that, I can respect the wait for the chapter.

If I am allowed to expand my creative idealisms (and it's #Blaugust, so why not?), I may guess that the process of putting together a single episode of Kentucky Route Zero is a delicate, complex process that takes time and patience to weave correctly. It's frustrating to have to wait a long time, but knowing that the next chapter will contain the same high amount of quality that the first three chapters had will have been worth the wait. Besides, having bought a season pass would be more worth it for five great chapters than three great chapters and then the last two put out hastily.

Here's something we're working on today"

A Wait Worth Sitting Through

I'm a huge, huge fan of Kentucky Route Zero. I've learned so much from Conway, Shannon, and all that they've met throughout Conway's quest to make a delivery. In fact, the current background of this blog is from Kentucky Route Zero itself. I played through the first three chapters in a matter of weeks, taking time to really drink in the atmospheres and dialogues, even voicing some of it on my Twitch stream. Seeing that Cardboard Computer is dedicated to quality rather than speed is only refreshing since they put out the announcement without any fluffy bits. Just honest facts.

So, peace restored to my five-foot-radius, I can safely say that I can continue to wait in earnest for whatever Cardboard Computer has next. Have you played Kentucky Route Zero? What do you think of it so far? Are you excited for what's next? What was that woolly mammoth...thing!? I'd love to chat about it in the comments below.

  1. It's still on my to-play list. Hopefully it won't remain there forever.

  2. I have yet to play (or own) Kentucky Route Zero, but I've heard a lot of great things about it! Too many games, though, so little time!
